teething - old school vs new school

It's October!  ^_^ I haven't written anything for a while so I thought I should post something to update my blog. It is already late though, so, this entry might be a little short. Forgive me but I need some shut-eye to function properly to do my iloy duties.

So... Tuka is teething! Yay - at least for now since Tuka isn't bitching yet. Hehehe..  :)

We have our 1st tooth @ 6 months and everyone is very happy here at home. Tuka did not experience any fever and did not show any sign of irritability. I guess it's because we only have a tooth for now.

However, Tuka's feeding pattern changed when he started teething. Now, he only takes a bottle when he is already half asleep. He refuses to drink milk no matter how hungry he is when he is awake. I guess it's because sucking makes his gums itch. So, I have readjusted his feeding schedule AGAIN. (sigh)

Tuka's 1st tooth.

We visited our Pedia yesterday and she told us that tooth #2 will be coming out very soon as well. So H and I are bracing ourselves for a possible Tuka meltdown. ^_^  It's better to be prepared. I am hoping Tuka will continue to teeth without any problems but other iloys out there have told me that eventually Tuka will have a fever and might become a bit cranky during the teething period. (sigh) So, I am already psyching myself not to breakdown during the teething process.

We are now taking Poly Vi Flor drops, 0.6 ml, once a day until Tuka turns 1. Poly Vi Flor will be replacing our Ferlin drops. This will help protect Tuka's teeth from possible damages due to bottle feeding and will encourage his teeth to grow stronger and faster.

As for teething materials we have 3 sets. A watermelon teether by Dr. Brown, teether/pacifier by Playtex and pacifiers by Avent (a gift from Lola Mama). H and I decided to splurge a little when it came to Tuka's teething materials because we didn't want him to develop bad teeth like me. For us it was a worthy investment.

Tuka and Sandy the teether. Sandy short for sandiya.  ;)

All materials are BPA and PVC free. Easy to clean and easy to sterilize. After cleaning & sterilizing, we pop them in the freezer. This was a trick H and I learned from mommy blogs in the internet. Cool teethers help sooth the itch, swelling and pain that babies feel during the teething period so we keep our teething materials inside the freezer. Hehehe.. :)

Playtex pacifier/teether.

The one from Playtex is very practical and convenient. It is a pacifier and a teether in one. The whole thing is made out of silicone so Tuka can bite it in any angle. The handle has little bumps for better stimulation, the body has holes so that air can flow which will help avoid any skin irritations around the baby's mouth and the nipple is long which is good for gum chewing and molars.

However, despite us loving our teething materials we still do teething the old school way here at home. So we regularly let Tuka chew and bite chicken bones and pork skin. Hehehe..  :)

How do we do it? For the chicken bone teether we use drumsticks. We will fry the chicken the regular way then we will take out all the meat and sharp parts then give the rest to Tuka. He loves it!  :D  For the pork skin, we usually go to the wet market and order pork that will give us a long strand of pork skin. Then we will cut it shaped like a long stick or breadstick, you know what I mean, then boil it with a little bit of salt. When it is cool enough, we give it to Tuka.

Thankfully Tuka is not picky. As long as he is chewing on something he is a-okay. So there you have it, Tuka's teething information. To other iloys out there: what did you guys do when your bambinos started teething? Beep me!  ^_^
